Vol XVI - #295 - January Thaw

Harbor1-17-17

Mild air moved in across the mitt last night with some freezing drizzle, making my driveway a ice rink.  Must be the January Thaw.

On another subject: Elected officials in 10 states have proposed legislation that would opt their states out of daylight saving time including Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas, Utah and Washington.  It’s about time.

I don’t understand the push by some for elimination of DST. Workers who drive home from a job are safer doing so in daylight, just to name one benefit of DST. Please someone, enlighten me.

That same worker, driving to work in the DST morning darkness, is less safe.

I remember the 1963 song by country music star Grandpa Jones. In part:
“I’ve twisted my old clock around ’til it ain’t worth a dime.
I’m losing sleep, I’m counting sheep.
I wake up late, I miss my date.
Couldn’t get there in a Cadillac 8.
On Daylight Saving Time.”
