Joanne and I are celebrating our 56th anniversary today. W e met at a ski club meeting and our first date was skiing at Wilmont Mt. Wisconsin. One year, one week and one day later we married.  Our dream honeymoon took us to Zurich, Switzerland and then Davos for a week of great skiing, then by train to Lech Austria for another. We caught the Orient Express to Vienna and from there flew to Paris, France for a week.  Boarding a Lockheed Super Constellation we flew to Shannon Ireland where everyone except us loaded up with booze, we bought ski sweaters.. We took off with Chicago as our destination, but couldn’t get above 10,000 feet over the Atlantic because of the headwinds and weight (booze). The aircraft was running low on fuel and had to make a landing in Gander, Newfoundland, which it did with elk running across the runway.  We made it home with the cabin cheering. A fantastic beginning to this 56 year adventure.

Unfortunately as we landed in Zurich, the plane with the United States Ice Skating Team crashed in Brussels, Belgium killing all aboard.

Below, with the return of Winter, also the return of the ice boats.

I am never disappointed in having my eyes and mind filled with your artistic and technical skills. Todays sharing of a great love story, however, brings a lump to my throat. You have such a beautiful family and a lovely spouse whose shared love made it all possible. My wife and I decided to share our love with new life after I took my MA from the U of M. She was in the last year of her BA from the U of Detroit. Our family eventually included six children, nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Our August anniversary will… Read more »
