I
don't like getting
philosophical or too sentimental on the Leland Report, but some things kinda grab at you. Back in February, 2002 I wondered about who lived here and what was their last day like in this house like and so on. I always thought that Mother Nature and Father Time were in charge of this history and eventually it would turn to dust. I guess in this case it will be ashes. Somewhere there must be a picture of this house and it's family generations sitting in front yard, perhaps Cliff Egeler has one, I would love to see it. Looking back three or four decades, I have pictures of a lot of homes that are bare ground today and I fear that I may be the only one that remembers what and where they were.

This is the type of home I've always dreamed about being able to purchase and restore (nevermind the work and money involved)... now it joins all the piled remains of barns along I-75 through KY and OH that we pass regularly. A lot of old homes and barns have fallen over the past 10 years...

As Kids we always pointed out those houses to our mother and told her that the house was waiting for her. I agree with the philosopher. At one time that house was new and there were very proud people living there.

Keith -- I've just been searching for your original post accompanying this wonderful picture with no joy. It's NOT February 7, 2002! So I bopped around the archives but just can't find it. Im guessing that house was doomed by the Nat'l Lakeshore, which took so many. At the time we complained a lot, but I'm one now who's grateful those farms and hills are not wall-to-wall condos and pocket mansions.

Dust to dust, ashes to ashes; cycle of life; progress; all depends upon your outlook on life

If I may wax philosophical with you, there are houses and there are homes, and this house was most likely both. I don't see it as a total loss - there are pictures in people's books and minds (and on the internet now. NOTHING dies on the internet!) that keep it alive. It's that "circle of life" stuff...

Well said, Mar. Reminds me of when I had to take the cottage down, except for the fireplace, so I could build a year-around home in it's place. My Dad and Mom, with the dubious help of their three daughters, built it in the early 40's and had many happy years in it. Fortunately there are lots of pictures and I can see every bit of it in my mind today.

This ole house once knew his children / This ole house once knew his wife / This ole house was home and comfort / As they fought the storms of life / This ole house once rang with laughter / This ole house heard many shouts / Now he trembles in the darkness / When the lightnin' walks about. Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer / Ain't a-gonna need this house no more / Ain't got time to fix the shingles / Ain't got time to fix the floor / Ain't got time to oil the hinges / Nor to mend the windowpane / Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer / He's a-gettin' ready to meet the saints. Detroit is full of places like this. Sadness on many blocks, and vacant fields where neighborhoods once teemed with families.
