Vol XV #115 – On a Day Like Today You Can Pass the Time Away

.  A word of caution to our local and summer folks, watch out for careless drivers of automobiles and bikes.  Especially the bikers who ride two feet inside the driving lane when they have 4 feet of shoulder.  With summer traffic heavy in both directions it doesn’t really seem very smart to make a statement about who owns the road. … Read more »

Vol XV #114 – Meggen’s Monday!

We are in the middle of a series of days that are quintessential Leelanau days: bright, vivid colors, blue skies with a touch of wispy clouds, sunny, enough breeze to sail, warm enough during the day to enjoy being on and in the water or out and about on local trails and dunes, and cool enough at night for a… Read more »

The Leland Yacht Club held a memorial Sunfish Regatta dedicated to the memory of Past Commodore Jim Fenton.  Jim was known for his love of racing his Sunfish and dedication to his years as LYC Commodore.  Present along with family members were Past Commodores Norb Gits, Bill Bolinger, Ted Sichler, Keith Burnham,  Mary Jo Grogan, John Stanley and Laura Paine.

Vol XV #112 – Just Before the Power Went Out

Mid-morning the sky darkened and the “Dark Sky” app on my I Phone started alerting that possible severe weather is on it’s way. The “Radar” app confirmed that with a fast moving, very red graphic headed for Leland.  The rain began to fall and power went out.  The internet remained until just before noon and it went out.  Logged onto ConsumerPower.com on… Read more »

Vol XV #111 – A Hazy Lazy Day

A damp and misty get-up with a little drizzle in the air.  You notice these things when you drive around with no top.  MDOT was on the job this morning with the promise of completing the resurfacing.  I must compliment them for the way they work, Elmer’s does a fine job of road construction. Most of the “Mac” boats have… Read more »

Vol XV #110 – M22 Facelift

A number of years ago the Leelanau County Road Commission experimented with a new road surface from Leland north to Leelanau Township.  It has been the worst decision they ever made and we have been listening to the road noise and rattling trucks ever since.   Today another section of it has been removed and replaced.  Yea!  Normally I don’t criticize the… Read more »

Vol XV #109 – View From the Bridge On a Leland Kind of Day

Forty nine years ago I drew this cartoon as part of a show at the Bluebird. The caption mentions 65 bucks as the price of the room in 1966.  ,I looked up what 65 “1966 bucks” would be worth today calculated for inflation and it would be $479.76.   Current rates are $195 to $295 a night during the summer. The… Read more »

Vol XV #107 – Meggen’s Monday

This weekend reminded me of a verse from the theme song so many sing with great joy: “… carefree days, starlit nights, cherry blossoms, northern lights… the afterglow when the sun has set, these are things I’ll never forget…” Venus and Jupiter showed brightly in the afterglow following Friday’s sunset. Later that evening, the aurora showed up.
