Joy Paint Job-0154-tlr

Joy, paint still wet

It’s a bright February morning! Grab your sunglasses and enjoy. Today we’re bringing you an update on the renovation of the trap net boat Joy. The new paint is the same kelly green as the original; it fades after years of exposure to the sun. The painting is made possible by the warmer weather, since the indoor temperature must be at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit in order to apply paint. It is much easier to raise the interior temp by ten or fifteen degrees than by more than that.

Upon closer examination: the Joy’s starboard side; note the higher rails.

Janice Sue Dock Rain-0194-tlr

Janice Sue, with paint faded by seven+ years of sun.

Could someone discuss how a trap net works? Also, it seems that the Janice Sue is a different kind of boat. What type of net does it use? Thanks

The pre-cursor to the trap net was the gill net, where the fish’s head would pass through the mesh and the gills would get trapped in the twine. That took a great toll on fish species that weren’t being targeted so many juvenile fish did not survive. The alternative was the trap net, which was a number of tall nets laid out vertically so fish are guided though a narrowing channel and eventually through a hole into another net they could not get out of. This page has a good history of it: http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-153-10364_52259-316019–,00.html I believe the Janice Sue has… Read more »

Love the otters! Are they around all year, or just in wintertime?

They’re year-round residents.

They became year round residents because of the high price of snowbird property taxes.
