Vol XVIII – #315 – More From Erhardt Peters

(Report by Jim while Keith is recuperating.) I like to pull out the photo above as a reminder of what it was like to drive in the Winter circa 1910-20. Clearing that amount of snow off M22 is not easy these days, so what a herculean effort it was back then! And the photo below probably could have been taken yesterday! Be… Read more »

Vol XVIII – #309 – Lighthouses From a Different Angle

Report by Jim Saturday, I took M22 and M31 down the whole state up to 196. Stopped at Pt. Betsie, Grand Haven, and Muskegon. Another first, as I have never visited these lighthouses in the winter. Lots of people applauded me for wearing chains on my shoes, as they slipped and slid all around the ice-covered walkway.

Vol XVIII – #308 – Close Call and a Breakwall

Report by Jim Thanks to Geno Miller for letting me camp on his lawn this afternoon to catch a few shots of his view. The ice in the water creates streaks that his Dad used to call “oil slicks”. Well, 10 degrees with a 25mph wind made for some chilly below-zero-windchill shots on the breakwall, but I’m glad I ventured… Read more »

Vol XVIII – #307 – Ice Ice and More Ice

Report by Jim Fishtown in Lights is back. The mortgage burning was postponed because of the ice storm, but the lights still went on at 6pm. Marsha Burnette of Fishtown Preservation was there with a sign for me while Andrew McFarland of leelanau.com recorded a message about Fishtown as the lights went on. Below is the ice that came down originally… Read more »

Vol XVIII – #306 – Ice and Fog on Lake Michigan

Report by Jim These are shots from Sunday on the way up. Holland and the Big Red Lighthouse in the fog and surrounded by lake ice. Later, Grand Haven Lighthouse and port side beacon light. Thes are the first lighthouses I’ve been able to visit during the Winter and it was quite a thrill, if not hazardous walking.
