(Report by Jim)
This afternoon, I headed up to cross country ski a trail I’ve hiked many times in the Summer. There is a extra “Winter Sports Loop” on the Mud Lake Trail at the end of Densmore just south of Leelanau State Park. The condition of the trail is just barely ski-able with no more than an inch of base. If you go out, you will feel the forest floor under your skis in many places. I’d wait for another few inches to fall before going back out on it. Still a great trail, I did almost a full 4.5 miles. Plenty of fat-tire tracks on this trail and that also looks like a lot of fun.Â
The Snow Gauge totals are a bit disappointing! 28.5 inches at the end of January is pitiful! Our lowest guess is 75″, so the arctic cyclone or polar vortex or snow-mageddon or whatever it’s called better kick into high gear!

Oh, to be a young squirt again.
Photos like this make me wish I knew how to cross country ski. Thanks! Ps There needs to be LOTS more snow for my guess to come close !
What I wouldn’t!
