Monochrome may be preferable when the form, light and texture of a scene are more important than the hues.
I remember when color television was new and some Hollywood geniuses — I think Ted Turner was one — did us all a favor by “colorizing” some black and white classic movies (and presumably did themselves a favor by preventing new TV set owners from changing channels just to view something — anything — that was in color). Fortunately we are past that travesty.
