The Leland Chamber is hosting a Community Day of Giving in support of Fishtown Preservation’s Campaign for Fishtown — on Saturday, September 21 — during the Leland Heritage Festival. Many Leland businesses have developed promotions (of their choice), and will have a Community Day of Giving sign in their window for visitors to identify participating businesses.

The Campaign for Fishtown funding will save / rehabilitate several shanties — including The Village Cheese Shanty, Carlson’s Fishery and the Morris Shanty (pictured above), Fishtown’s oldest structure. It will also resolve infrastructure issues, including docks, and the installation of a new entryway and landscaping. Critical work on the shanties is scheduled to begin this fall.

During the Heritage Festival, Fishtown Preservation will have informational tables set up to answer Campaign for Fishtown questions and to show the campaign project plans to visitors at both Van’s Car Show and the Leelanau Historical Society’s Boats on the Wall exhibit locations — and of course, in Fishtown. There will also be exhibits about the site project, as well as campaign project tours in Fishtown.

You can help by taking part in the promotions at participating Leland businesses, or by making a direct donation to Fishtown Preservation (FPS). To donate or for more information, please contact FPS:

Please join the Leland community in supporting The Campaign for Fishtown. Fishtown is vital to Leland’s economy, and is a regional gem! Consumer’s Energy recently gave a $25,000 grant towards the $2,500,000 campaign, and shared:

“Fishtown is not only an economic draw for the Grand Traverse Region, it is a significant site in Michigan. We are proud to be part of a project that will ensure Fishtown’s future,” –Carolyn Bloodworth, secretary/treasurer of the Consumers Energy Foundation.
