Taking today to reflect, with gratitude, all who answered the call to serve our great nation. In particular those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. We remember. May we all find a moment to pause, hand on heart, this Memorial Day.
It’s worth noting that the Leelanau Conservancy’s Houdek Dunes hosts beautiful ladies slippers and these should come into bloom in the next several days. Pro tip, while you’re up near Gills Pier: Fischer’s Happy Hour Tavern has an appetizer worth tasting: local asparagus wrapped in bacon and drizzled with orange ginger sauce. They should have it for the next couple of weeks, beautifully overlapping the time frame of the wild orchid display.

It has long been a tradition in our family to refer jokingly to the ultimate in fine gourmet cuisine as “asparagus tips on toast” — and as a prank last week some in my family secretly persuaded the chef at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs where we were having lunch to prepare for me asparagus tips on toast! It surely paled in comparison to what Fischer’s Happy Hour Tavern creates.
