Vol XV #298 – Someday it Will Stop Flaking

Another day with snowflakes to wake up to.  Granted they are just flakes but never the less, they are snowflakes and I’m tired of snowflakes.    The Leland Report/Leif Spork Snow Gauge contest is closed. We had a total of 47 entries. We will report the final tally on 4/30/16!

Vol XV #292 – Stopped Snowing… What’s Coming Next ?

Visibility at sunrise was as far as you could see, a couple of hundred feet was about all for the past week.  Forecast calls for warming to somewhere in the 30’s and rain mixed with snow.  Walking in other peoples foot deep footprints, I made it down to Fishtown and much the same at Van’s Beach over a big drift.  I… Read more »

Vol XV #287 – Waiting For Winter to Return

Another gloomy beginning, dark and dreary.  The early afternoon no different. Snow was forecasted to fall around four, it began falling at two.  The snow is falling along with the temperature and winter is returning.  The Leland Report/Leif Spork Snow Gauge contest is closed. We had a total of 47 entries. We will report the final tally on 4/30/16!

Vol XV #285 – A Black & White Beginning With a Touch of Orange

A calm and cloudy beginning.  The forecasts include everything, rain, sleet and possible snow.  So far nothing.  The morning darkness starts to brighten up mid February when the sun rises at 7:45.  I like to begin our journey around 8.  The Leland Report/Leif Spork Snow Gauge contest is closed. We had a total of 47 entries. We will report the final… Read more »

Vol XV #273 – Powering Down

(Report by Jim) Still a blackout in Leland. Today’s photos are by Erhardt Peters, turn of the century photographer from Ludington and Leland. Fishing was year-round as long as the ice was passable. And if the ice wasn’t passable, they made it passable. According to Joel Petersen, the rocking made it easier to move through the ice. This is circa… Read more »

Vol XV #267 – the Shortest Day

Above picture from this date in 2013.  With the temperature over 40 and at the moment sun shining, there isn’t going to be any snow left when this day ends, even in Suttons Bay.  Tomorrow, rain.  Back in the 1950’s, my wife along with many other Lelanders took ski lessons with Peppi Teichner at Sugar Loaf Mt. and in the 60’s, 70’s… Read more »

Vol XV #265 – Winter Wonderland

Hey out there… pack your skies and head to… maybe Telluride, cause it’s just not snowing that hard here, but it is snowing.   So far we have gotten a dusting of the white stuff, enough to have Leif put on his winter garb after yesterdays change.     Click here to enter the 2016 Snow Gauge contest! Win a custom… Read more »

Vol XV #264 – A Windy Day Again I’d Say

Another one of those windy days except for the direction.  Same views as yesterday with a more dynamic lake, both sight and sound.  Actually the wind is blowing about 10 mph less than yesterday but from a different direction.  What difference a day makes, especially if the wind changes direction.       Click here to enter the 2016 Snow… Read more »

Vol XV #263 – A Beautiful Day in Spite of it all

Hard to believe that with the wind gusting to 32 mph, Big Blue is flat as a pancake and as green as a shamrock, but it is.  Had a couple of seconds of sunshine tossed in with a little bit of rain.  The weather people are telling us that snow is on it’s way, but not today.     Below is our… Read more »
