Above average temperatures dominate the weather news. Usually at this time of year, a white weather pattern involves snow rather than fog. But rainy fog is what we have – where the familiar shoreline disappears into a bank of misty white. Meanwhile behind the scenes, the Joy is being fitted with rails that are about eight inches higher. The fishermen… Read more »

I went out Friday morning to see the three freighters that are proving Good Harbor Bay true to its name. Strong winds caused the Great Republic, Algoma Navigator, and Algosoo (L to R) to stop here overnight. Click here to enter the 2016 Snow Gauge contest! Win a custom Leif Spork tile!

We have a mild and gray Monday today. At Mr. Burnham’s request, we are featuring photos of bowls turned from trees downed during the August 2 storm. Members of the Northwestern Michigan Woodturners Club are turning these bowls from sections of hardwood trees that fell that day, as a way for neighbors and those in the community to commemorate their… Read more »

Sunrise, sunset… a canopy of fall clouds makes a light-catching backdrop both just after sunset last night and just before (an earlier/more normal-feeling) sunrise this morning. Those who were driving anywhere just after 7 am were treated to an array of pinks. Â

It’s grayer and cloudier today than it was yesterday, when I joined the many people out cruising M-22, taking in the richness of fall color. I traipsed up the Dune Climb, hoping to see more from that elevation. Along about that time, clouds rolled in. All told, the fall color of 2015 has been delightful, and perhaps continuing longer… Read more »

A perfect fall day, complete with wind blowing leaves every which way, and not too cold. It started out with a pre-dawn line-up of Venus, Jupiter, and Mars. At sunset last night, the freighter Great Lakes Trader and tug Joyce L. VanEnkevort moved slowly through the Manitou Passage. Same place, 24 hours earlier – windy, wavy, and chilly, with a hundred… Read more »
