(Report by Jim) If you were not aware, there is a struggle going on in the Michigan Legislature regarding commercial fishing rights on Lake Michigan. It could possibly mean the end of commercial fishing in Leland. Please read about the current situation and do what you can to pressure your representatives to do the right thing for the remaining family-owned… Read more »

(Report by Jim. Photos by Frank Harden) Today’s photos are sent in from Frank Harden, who was around for some Parasailing adventures at Van’s beach. The photo below is the status of the new Leland Public School building. Thanks, Frank! Today was the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice-President. One thing we all learned is… Read more »

Past Glen Haven where the iconic red Cannery building sits, M-209 runs to the old Life Saving station, and beyond that, to a parking lot for the trailhead of the Sleeping Bear Point trail. We weren’t the only ones out there on a mild Sunday afternoon. A dusting of snow played up the contrast in this wild dunes landscape. It… Read more »

Just for today, we are trotting out some “Favorite Things” images from summertime, a couple of summers ago…watching for the Joy to return to Leland… gazing at the Big Dipper surrounded by the aurora borealis, from Glen Haven… and tumbling down the Dune Climb. Here are the 2020-21 Snow Gauge Contest entries! We had 41 entries and looks like the… Read more »

Happy New Year! This weekend we saw mild temps (above freezing) and low to no wind, which made ideal hiking conditions. The stretch along the north edge of Pyramid Point, accessed by Bohemian Road, is a new favorite (or an old favorite, for many). The dune continues to erode, with active water run-off (and residual snow), which produced cinnamon-roll-like sand… Read more »

(Report by Jim) Welcome to 2021! To start the year out right, we spent the better part of this morning mopping up some leaking water in the basement. That left a little time to go up to Lighthouse West Natural Area for a short hike. (Leelanau Conservancy, right off Cathead Bay Dr., right before the entrance to Leelanau State Park)Â … Read more »

(Report by Jim) I’ve been to the beach on Bohemian Rd many times, but never the trails East or West down Lake Michigan Dr. Photos today are from the East Trail, which looks like a great cross country ski trail, and the beach on the West side. We thank everyone doing everything they can working the front lines and shining… Read more »

(Report by Jim) The two hikes this week at Sleeping Bear Point was so productive, I had more to show. The main photo tonight is the trail marker on the dune down to the lake. It has to be that high in order to see in from down on the beach. High waves erased the two scenes below. Although I… Read more »

(Report by Jim) The main photo tonight is a summary of sorts of over 50 years of rock collecting in this family. When we go to the beach, we all bring back three of four of our favorites. I’ve been doing the same this year and part of this spread includes all those rocks in addition to select rocks from… Read more »

(Report by Jim) Most of the snow that fell yesterday is gone now with the rain today. I’m getting the snow gauge contest ready to go for the 20-21 season. Check out the Extras menu on Friday to enter. Check your almanac, read some tea leaves, consult your local psychic, but odds are they will all be wrong! Last year’s… Read more »
