Vol XV #151 – Cool and No Sun For Us

The morning started out much like yesterday with clouds and wind. The weather hasn’t kept visitors away from Fishtown and for that matter the rest of Leland.  Unfortunate for those who have rented space for the week, it’s been a bad weather one. The forecast is for warming up and partly cloudy the next 5 days.

Vol XV #150 – It Wasn’t the Nicest Day, It Wasn’t the Worst

The morning started out much better than what the day became.  It was a rainy day in Leland Town.    To all subscribers: You may have noticed new advertisements on the left side column. Although I’ve resisted selling ad space for many years, it is going to help our bottom line and allow us to keep publishing the report. The… Read more »

Vol XV #148 – St. Wenc’s 125th

Bishop Steven Raica of the Catholic Diocese of Gaylord celebrated the 125th birthday of St. Wenceslaus Church at 8:00 am mass this morning.  The well attended mass posed for a picture and went on to breakfast with the Bishop and Rev. Tony Cureton who currently serves mass each Sunday at St. Wenc. as well as St. Kateri Tekakwitha in Peshawbetown… Read more »

Vol XV #140 – The Wonderful World of Ellie Golden

One of my favorite piece’s of artwork hanging on my wall is an Ellie Golden Fishtown watercolor.  Last night, the Old Art Building was host to a amazing exhibit of Ellie’s work in many mediums.  The exhibit continues today and tomorrow.   It’s no secret that Leland is an artist’s haven and we are very fortunate to have so many talented artists as our… Read more »

Vol XV #139 – A Magical Place in the Land of Delight

Maro Nook is up for sale.  July 1960, I spent my first night in Leland here at Maro Nook as a newly engaged house guest. My wife’s father Remi Gits bought this beautiful home in the late thirties from Harry Harrison, who had bought it from Mrs. Maro (Allie).  Harry Harrison owned Redpath Orchards and was the founder of… Read more »

Vol XV #127 – Summer Storm of 2015

Got a call early this morning from Leland. “Looks like you’ll be doing the report tonight, the power is out here.” As of 5pm, the power was still out and judging from the damage, it will be out for a while. Hope everyone is safe and dry.  -Jim After the storm…

Vol XV #126 – The Leland Coffee Club

Congratulations to this newly married couple exiting Fishtown as I arrived. The International Coffee Club of America, Leland Coffee Club, held it’s last sip this morning at the Leland Fire House. It’s next sip will be Monday morning at the Leland Lodge. The club was organized on March 4th, 1964 and has no by-laws, no officers, no dues and… Read more »

Vol XV #124 – Van’s Beach On a Breezy Morning

The morning began breezy with a chance of beautiful and it was.  The harbor was full up with a few hanger backs because of the wind out of the west at 16 mph. Of course local businesses like this a lot as it keeps captive boaters in town to shop and dine.

Vol XV #110 – M22 Facelift

A number of years ago the Leelanau County Road Commission experimented with a new road surface from Leland north to Leelanau Township.  It has been the worst decision they ever made and we have been listening to the road noise and rattling trucks ever since.   Today another section of it has been removed and replaced.  Yea!  Normally I don’t criticize the… Read more »
